GILMER, TX (05/18/2016) — A three-vehicle accident involving two 18-wheelers claimed the life of Robert Williams on Wednesday morning.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identified 57-year-old Robert Wayne Williams (of Overton) as the victim of a fatal 18-wheeler accident that occurred near the intersection of Highway 271 and Lavender Road in Gilmer, Texas.
DPS Troopers stated that at around 3:30 a.m., the driver of a northbound 18-wheeler crossed into oncoming traffic and clipped the side of a southbound 18-wheeler. The northbound tractor trailer tipped over and spilled its load of chicken parts onto the road.
After the initial impact, a northbound pickup truck—driven by Williams and towing a utility trailer—struck the 18-wheeler that was now blocking the lanes of the highway.
Williams lost his life at the scene.
The DPS is currently investigating this fatal collision.
Commentary
Investigators have not revealed the cause of this accident, but as it occurred at around 3:30 a.m., it wouldn’t be far-fetched to speculate that driver fatigue may have played a significant role in the initial collision.
Truck drivers are notorious for experiencing extreme fatigue caused by long hours on the road, which is why the FMCSA has strict rules regarding hours of service for truck drivers. We will wait on the results of the investigation, and will update this story when we have additional information.
