FAYETTE COUNTY, TX — DPS is investigating after three people were killed in a head-on collision on U.S. 77 Saturday morning.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), at around 8:09 a.m., a 2015 Lexus crossover SUV headed south on US 77 lost control, drifted into the northbound lanes of traffic, and collided head-on with a 2014 Nissan Frontier pickup truck about two miles south of Schulenburg, Texas.
The two occupants of the Nissan Frontier—identified as 67-year-old Roger Cheney and 64-year-old Cynthia Marie Cheney (a married couple from Inez)—were pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Dan Mueller. An unnamed 15-year-old male passenger in the Lexus (from Alvin) was also pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Lexus, 52-year-old Denise Cain, was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin in critical condition.
According to reports, the road was wet at the time of the accident. DPS spokesperson Sgt. David Roberts says “The Texas DPS would like to remind motorists to slow down during adverse weather conditions.”
