SHALLOWATER, TX (09/27/2015) — Austin Burford was killed, and Kolton Rexrode was injured, early Sunday morning after a single-vehicle rollover wreck.
Lubbock police have identified 19-year-old Austin Burford as the victim of a fatal Sunday morning accident along FM 1294 and North County Road 1300 in Shallowater, Texas. The accident also injured 18-year-old Kolton Rexrode.
According to Bryan Witt (a public information officer with the Texas Department of Public Safety), shortly after 1:00 a.m., Rexrode was traveling eastbound on FM 1294 in a 1974 Oldsmobile passenger vehicle at a high rate of speed when he skidded sideways and rolled over.
The impact ejected his passenger, Burford, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Burford was transported to University Medical Center (UMC) in Lubbock, Texas with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.
Authorities state that Rexrode was taken to Covenant Hospital with minor injuries.
Police believe alcohol may have been a possible factor. This fatal accident remains under investigation.
