LAMPASAS, TX (07/12/2017) — Police have charged a Lampasas man with intoxication manslaughter after they say he drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic and caused a fatal head-on collision Wednesday.
The accident occurred on FM 580 (about 10 miles west of Lampasas) at around 12:51 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.According to DPS spokesperson David Roberts, 23-year-old Tyler Allen Prothro (of Lampasas) was driving a 2007 Dodge pickup truck eastbound on FM 580 when the truck “drifted onto the wrong side of the road” and struck a westbound 2003 Chevrolet Suburban SUV head-on.
The driver of the Suburban, 70-year-old Ronald Bascom (of Lometa), was pronounced deceased at the scene by Lampasas County Justice of the Peace Cameron Brister.
Prothro refused medical treatment at the scene of the crash. Troopers determined that alcohol was involved, and Prothro was arrested and taken to the Lampasas County Jail on one count of intoxication manslaughter.
This crash is still under an active investigation by Texas DPS.
