MIDLAND, TX (01/14/2017) — An 18-wheeler accident early Saturday morning claimed the life of Rose Contreras and injured Josiah Contreras.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 43-year-old Rose Mary Contreras (of San Angelo) was killed and her son, 16-year-old Josiah Contreras, suffered injuries after an 18-wheeler accident on Texas State Highway 158 (TX-158) about 12 miles east of Midland, Texas.
The DPS reported that at around 12:19 a.m., 54-year-old Adalberto M. Almanza was traveling eastbound in a 2001 Freightliner semi-trailer “at unsafe speeds” when he hydroplaned, veered into westbound traffic, and collided with a 2008 Mazda CX-9, driven by Contreras.
Rose Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene. Josiah suffered incapacitating injuries. Almanza was reportedly uninjured. All occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
DPS is currently investigating this incident.
Police have not filed charges against the driver who caused this collision; however, we suspect that police may pursue charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. A full investigation should reveal which charges (if any) this driver could face.
To those affected by this accident, we offer our condolences.
