LEANDER, TX (11/03/2015) — An early morning 18-wheeler wreck claimed the life of Ryan Melton on Tuesday.
Leander police have identified 27-year-old Ryan Christopher Melton as the victim of a fatal Tuesday morning 18-wheeler accident at the intersection of Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Hero Way in Leander, Texas.
Officials reported that shortly before 7:00 a.m., an 18-wheeler was turning left onto Hero Way from northbound Ronald Reagan Boulevard when the accident occurred. As the 18-wheeler was pulling out across southbound lanes of Ronald Reagan Boulevard, a black pickup truck headed south broadsided the big rig, leaving the pickup truck partially underneath the 18-wheeler.
Ryan Melton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured in the collision and stayed at the scene speaking with investigators for several hours.
Authorities believe this accident occurred due to low visibility caused by morning fog.
Commentary
Did the foggy weather conditions block the 18-wheeler driver from seeing Mr. Melton’s vehicle approaching? If the truck driver could not see approaching traffic, why did he feel it was safe to cross a 65 mph road at an uncontrolled intersection? I for one hope a thorough investigation reveals exactly what led to this tragic accident.
