BELTON, TX (11/15/2017) — Police have identified the victim of a fatal accident on FM 439 involving a dump truck.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Dave Roberts, 60-year-old Thomas Gray (of Belton) was identified as the victim of a two-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon just east of Belton in Bell County.
The truck accident occurred at around 2:55 p.m. in the 9300 block of FM 439 (at the intersection with Courtney Lane). According to reports, Gray was driving a 2002 Chevrolet passenger van eastbound on FM 439 when he slowed to make a legal left turn onto Courtney Lane. At the same time, the driver of a 2003 International dump truck (also heading eastbound) either did not notice Gray’s vehicle or failed to keep a safe following distance and attempted to avoid a collision by veering into the oncoming lane of traffic. Unfortunately, the dump truck collided with the left side of Gray’s van.
As a result of the collision, Thomas Gray was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. His passenger, 64-year-old Willie Bailey, Jr. (of Nolanville) was transported to Seton Medical Center Harker Heights for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the dump truck was reportedly uninjured.
