TRINITY, TX (12/01/2016) — Seven-year-old Journey Magness was killed, and several others were injured in a Thursday morning accident involving a school van.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 7-year-old Journey Magness (of Trinity) was tragically killed a two-vehicle collision on FM 1893 in Trinity, Texas.
The DPS reported that at around 7:30 a.m., 17-year-old Micah Brock was traveling in a 2008 Ford pickup truck with three passengers when she rear-ended a Trinity ISD van—driven by 55-year-old Chandra Wheeler—that had stopped to pick up a child.
Magness, who was a passenger in the van and the daughter of Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputy David Magness, was transported to East Texas Medical Center. Unfortunately, the doctors were unable to save her life.
A spokeswoman for East Texas Medical Center stated that a total of 10 occupants (including the three passengers of the pickup truck) were taken to the same hospital in fair condition. The driver of the pickup was reportedly uninjured.
DPS is currently investigating this incident, but investigators did note that all of the children were properly secured at the time of the collision.
Police have said that the at-fault party’s vision may have been obscured at the time of the crash. However, this does not necessarily absolve the driver of responsibility. Police have not said if charges will be filed, but we will provide more details on the matter as they become available.
