Tuesday afternoon around 3:30pm, 62-year-old Sharon Williams inexplicable drove her 2012 Honda across the center line of Highway 121. Originally travelling south, Williams crossed over into the northbound lanes just before Highway 11. Her vehicle smashed head-on into the Philips’ family who were traveling northbound in a 2004 Honda. Two of the five people in the car were killed. 45-year-old Reena Daniel and 14-year-old Daniel Philips both died at the scene. The two younger children, Sara Philips age 6 and Samuel Philips age 11 were both taken to Children’s Medical Center. The driver, Johny Philips age 47, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Parkland Hospital. Our hearts here at the firm go out to the Philips family as they heal from their injuries and struggle with their losses.
Sharon Williams was also injured and was taken to Parkland in serious condition. The Department of Public Safety has not yet concluded its investigation into the incident. Head-on collisions are often a result of driving under the influence, but it’s unclear if that was the case Tuesday afternoon. The Department will also look into the possibilities of speed and distracted driving.
