ELKHART, TX (06/20/2015) — A wrong way crash involving a Ford F-150 and a tow truck claimed the life of 81-year-old Don Cowan.
Officials have confirmed that 81-year-old Don Cowan died following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 287 near Elkhart, Texas on Monday afternoon.
According to a preliminary report from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), shortly after 12:00 p.m., Cowan was traveling southbound on U.S. 287 in a Ford F-150 when a northbound tow truck, driven by 27-year-old David Butler, caused a head-on accident.
Authorities have stated that Butler failed to control his speed after traffic had slowed down for a driver who was loading gas into a vehicle which was stopped on the shoulder of U.S. 287. As a result, Butler swerved his tow truck into oncoming traffic resulting in a serious accident involving Don Cowan’s pickup truck.
A local Justice of the Peace pronounced Cowan dead at the scene. His body was taken to Herrington Funeral Home in Palestine, Texas.
Butler was transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center for treatment.
This incident remains under investigation by the DPS.
