ROUND ROCK, TX (08/17/2016) — A rollover accident on Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of Yonathan Lopez.
Round Rock Police identified 23-year-old Yonathan Lopez as the victim of a fatal two-vehicle collision that happened at Gattis School Road near Oxford Drive and Greenlawn Boulevard in Round Rock, Texas.
Police reported that at around 1:00 p.m., the 18-year-old driver of a Nissan Z was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle. The Nissan then struck a curb and a fire hydrant before flipping and colliding with a box truck.
“By the time I got to the guy there was too many people around, I put my finger in his hands and asked him if he was alright, squeeze my finger and I didn’t get a response,” said Jose Gonzalez, a witness.
Lopez, the passenger in the Nissan, lost his life at the scene. The driver was taken to St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation is pending.
Commentary
Police have yet to determine if the driver who caused this accident will face criminal charges. Even if he is not charged, he could still face a wrongful death lawsuit from the victim’s family.
