In the second fatal Dallas 18-wheeler accident in 24 hours, a 13-year old boy lost his life this morning when his father’s big rig jumped an interstate median and hit a concrete pillar.
According to NBC DFW, Hector Hernandez was riding in the sleeper section of his father’s tractor trailer when the accident occurred. For reasons yet to be determined, the 18-wheeler drifted off the right side of eastbound I-30 near Lockheed Boulevard. The big rig hopped a median, ran over a guardrail and struck a concrete pillar supporting Spur 341. Hector passed away on the scene. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital, and we are currently unaware of his condition.
After impact, TXDOT feared the bridge may collapse and have since deployed temporary supports. They are currently recommending drivers avoid the area and use I-20 or Loop 820 in lieu of their normal route. With any luck, all lanes of eastbound I-30 will be open by Friday night.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hector Hernandez and the injured driver. Drive safely, Dallas.
